Inauguration of the 2026/2027 Academic & Formative Year

Embracing a New Season of Formation: St. Joseph Major Seminary Inaugurates the 2026/2027 Academic Year

The bells of St. Joseph Major Seminary, Ikot Ekpene, ring out with renewed energy and purpose! Following weeks of quiet anticipation across our campus, the 2026/2027 academic and formative year is now officially underway.

Our community began coming back to life earlier this month, first welcoming the fresh faces of our new intake on October 3rd, followed by the return of our senior seminarians on October 6th. For returning brothers and newcomers alike, stepping back onto the grounds brought a wonderful surprise: our cherished Seminary Chapel has undergone a full renovation. Stepping into the refreshed sacred space—with its renewed ambiance and reverent beauty—has set a truly uplifting spiritual tone for the work ahead.

With the community settled and community life in full swing, we are thrilled to mark the official opening of the academic session with our formal inauguration events.

Welcoming Our Chief Shepherd: Most Revd. Joseph E. Ekuwem

The Rector, formation team, staff, and seminarians are filled with profound joy to cheerfully welcome His Grace, Most Revd. Joseph E. Ekuwem, Archbishop of Calabar Archdiocese, to our seminary community for this year’s inaugural celebration.

Archbishop Ekuwem’s pastoral presence among us is always a source of deep encouragement, wisdom, and paternal blessing as we begin this new cycle of intellectual, spiritual, human, and pastoral growth.

Highlights of the Inauguration Programme

Our inauguration unfolds over two power-packed days of scholarly dialogue, prayer, and celebration:

Day 1: Engaging Contemporary Thought (Wednesday, 21st October, 2026)

The celebrations open at 8:30 PM with the Inaugural Lecture:

  • Topic: Secularization, Pluralism and the Nigerian After-Effect
  • Speaker: Rev. Fr. Dr. Charles Asuquo

In an increasingly complex culture, Fr. Asuquo’s lecture invites formators and seminarians into critical reflection on how the Gospel message engages the sociological and philosophical shifts within contemporary Nigeria.

Day 2: Fellowship, Holy Mass & Academic Honours (Thursday, 22nd October, 2026)

The second day marks the official reception of His Grace and the ceremonial commencement of academic activities:

  • Part 1 — Solemn Eucharistic Celebration (9:00 AM | Seminary Chapel):
The high point of the event gathers the entire community inside our newly renovated Chapel to offer thanksgiving to God and ask the Holy Spirit to guide our minds and hearts throughout the formative year.
  • Part 2 — Reception & Presentation of Academic Awards (Seminary Auditorium):
Following Mass, the community moves to the Seminary Auditorium to celebrate dedication and intellectual discipline. We will be honouring outstanding brothers who distinguished themselves in their studies during the previous academic session.

Journey With Us in Prayer

Every new academic year is a sacred pilgrimage of discernment and growth. We ask our alumni, benefactors, religious families, and friends of the seminary to keep our formators and seminarians in your daily prayers. May our work in the lecture halls and our time before the Blessed Sacrament bear abundant fruit for the Church.

St. Joseph, Pillar of Families and Patron of the Universal Church, pray for us!
